Sustainability in Higher Education

Seminarium

The Swedish Higher Education Act stated that "In the course of their operations, higher education institutions shall promote sustainable development to assure for present and future generations a sound and healthy environment, economic and social welfare, and justice". One crucial step towards this goal is to ensure the synergy among the university community-particularly between students and teachers/staff. To this end, the students´ sustainability coordinators at the Centre for environment and sustainability, GMV, has organized this forum.

The Swedish Higher Education Act stated that "In the course of their operations, higher education institutions shall promote sustainable development to assure for present and future generations a sound and healthy environment, economic and social welfare, and justice" (Chapter 1, Section 5). Likewise, one of the aims in the university´s 2017-2019 Action Plan for the Environment and Sustainable Development is to increase and assure the quality of integrating sustainable development into courses and study programmes (p.12). Achieving this requires commitment and strong collaboration across the university. One crucial step towards striving to this goal is to ensure the synergy among the university community-particularly between students and teachers/staff. To this end, the students´ sustainability coordinators at the Centre for environment and sustainability, GMV, has organized a forum. The overall purpose of the forum is to bring together students, student leaders and staff to discuss the visibility and integration of sustainability and sustainable development within the university¿s teaching learning process and other activities.

The key objectives of the forum are to:

- Create inspiration about sustainability and its relevance in higher education
and discuss the challenges, best practices and strategies pertaining to integration of sustainability to courses.

- Create a platform to discuss how the university¿s action on sustainability could be better recognized, connected, and amplified.

- Identify areas of common interest and potential joint activities (among participants) for the future.

- Brainstorm ideas for increasing student participation and interest in contributing towards sustainability, and also link key people (programmes) and areas at Gothenburg university involved in organising student activities related to Sustainability (e.g. student unions, student council, etc.).

While striving towards the above objectives, it is hoped that the forum would yield to some concrete and innovative ideas that can be implemented in the effort to systematically integrate sustainability into different practices (both educational and operational) across gothenburg university.
